Paper presented at ICAE 2021

Miriam Al Lily (a PhD student at our institute) presented her paper entitled "Risk and time preferences of poor urban households in Saudi Arabia" at the International Conference of Agricultural Economist (ICAE 2021) in August 2021. The conference is organized every three years by the IAAE (International Association of Agricultural Economists) and attracts thousands of colleagues from around the world.

Her presentation examined poverty in the context of behavioural economics in Saudi Arabia. In regards to asset poverty, poorer household heads are more risk averse and impatient. In contrast, in regards to income poverty, poorer household heads take on more risk. Especially heads without access to social safety nets tend to be more risk loving. In general, there is a u-shaped relationship between income and risk taking, whereas both lower and higher income households take on more risk.
