Best paper award for Miriam Al Lily

Miriam Al Lily, PhD student of our institute, received the 'Best Paper Award' at the 'ICP 2020: 14th International Conference on Poverty' for her paper 'The Determinants of Urban Poverty in Saudi Arabia: Evidence from a Socio-Economic Household Survey'. The conference was held online from the 17-18th of December and was organized by the World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology.

Her paper presented results from a study on urban poverty in Saudi Arabia. The aim of the research was to analyze the demographic, economic, and social dimensions of poverty. The presentation showed that education and unemployment were crucial determinants of poverty outcomes. In addition, large family sizes combined with the tradition of having a single breadwinner pushed households into poverty. Female-headed households were particularly vulnerable. Further, social capital positively impacted households’ welfare, whereas being of African descent had a negative influence.
