- Causes of and interrelationship between underdevelopment, poverty and food insecurity, hunger,malnutrition and famines, the role of agriculture in economic development; the connection between food production, food prices and food security; food security strategies at global, national and household lever: food aid, agricultural-led growth, entitlement approach, participatory rural development, the economics of rural households in poor countries.

Das Seminar ist eine Gemeinschaftsveranstaltung für Studierende des Faches Entwicklungsökonomik und der beiden ökonomischen Prüfungsfächer im Studium Gartenbauwissenschaften. Die Studierenden sollen zu einem Thema einen 20 minütigen Vortrag halten, der anschließend diskutiert wird. Für die erfolgreiche Teilnahme (Hausarbeit, Vortrag, regelmäßige Teilnahme an der Diskussion) wird ein Schein erteilt. Literatur:

This seminar is targeted at students who are interested in microfinance, which is the supply of financial services to low-income people. Even though microfinance is not limited to developing countries, the seminar covers mostly Africa, Asia and Latin America.
The seminar starts with a series of four lectures. In these, the basics of microfinance are introduced and the three components of microfinance, i.e. microcredit, microsavings, and microinsurance, are presented. The lectures are held on April 10th, 17th, 24th and May 8th from 12:45-14:15 in room III-115.
The lectures are followed by group work. Groups are requested to study the supply of microfinance in a selected country and to propose an innovative microfinance product tailored to this country. The result of the group work is presented in two half-day sessions (Blockseminar) at the end of the semester.
The seminar will be held in English. The grading will take into account the seminar paper written by the group (70%) and the presentation given (30%). Thirty students (ten groups per three students) are allowed for this seminar.
